Once upon a time on the musical island of Trinidad, there lived a boy in St. James named Ryan Pankar. Ryan had been born of music…..surrounded by the tassa drums of Hosay in the womb and born on a Carnival Monday – it was inevitable that music would be in his blood. His parents were connoisseurs of music, as were his siblings. Ryan was weaned on an extensive record and cassette collection of music ranging from Pan Am North Stars steelband to Julio Iglesias. So it was no coincidence when Ryan also started his own cassette collection with the quiet aspiration of one day becoming a DJ.
In 1999 a group of Fatima school mates started the Platinum Sound System. The group consisted of the twins Kerwin and Kenwin Gardiner, Sean Newsam, Nicholas Mohammed and Ryan Pankar. Practice sessions were a frequent occurrence at Sean's residence using two cd discmans and a mixer.
Their very first gig in December that year saw them playing at a Coco Velvet party in Haleland Park with two 10-pack cds of music. Some months later they decided to change the name to Titan and added two new members-Steven Samuel and Nicholas Pena. Titan continued to build its reputation and became one of the most talked about ‘up and coming’ sound systems in the party circuit, particularly at UWI which became a forum for most of their events. Titan also played at top night clubs like Base, Pier 1, Tsunami and Liquid and began hosting their own events.
In 2004 Nicholas Pena and Ryan Pankar made the decision to branch off into their own entity - XTC. They soon got their big break in the latter part of 2004 when they joined the 51 degrees night club cast of DJs. XTC became regulars at the nightclub and began to build the XTC brand by playing in numerous other events throughout the year (especially during the carnival season) for promoters such as Tribe, Red Ants, Jamboree and Island People to name a few.
XTC was welcomed into both the Tribe family of road DJs as well as Red Ants J’ouvert. They also added corporate events and weddings, as well as regional and international bookings to their repertoire. The year 2011 saw the end of XTC when Nicholas Pena and Ryan Pankar parted ways and the beginning of a new era….
Ryan decided to search for a competent teammate to partner with him on the microphone. As luck would have it Patrick Alexis visited Ryan the night before he was to audition for a new mic man and hearing the situation asked for the opportunity to get a shot at the position.
Although Patrick had no prior experience he had a similar background, with a father and siblings that cultivated a strong love of music in him. His dad’s vinyl collection ranged from Michael Jackson to Pavarotti and his siblings influence came from the ‘Party Time’ era. Perhaps also sharing his birthday with music legend Bob Marley was a sign of destiny. Patrick started DJing as a hobby while attending university in Canada. He could not afford a laptop at the time and would tote his entire PC in a suitcase from house parties and small clubs
After countless hours in the studio, the synergistic duo launched their own unique brand of NUPHORIC... with their tag line being "Life One Beat At A Time".
Nuphoric is currently one of the main members of the 51 degrees night club cast of DJs and continues to be the preeminent DJ team in Trinidad hired for major events - both corporate and on the party circuit.
