For this second edition of DO View, we’re exploring ideas around design and progress: we’ll take a quick look at why we create, bid a fond farewell to hot metal typesetting at a major newspaper, and explore the craft of hand-painted signs.

Why Man Creates

Why Man Creates is an animated short documentary that focuses on the creative process and the different approaches taken to that process. It is divided into eight sections: The Edifice, Fooling Around, The Process, Judgment, A Parable, Digression, The Search, and The Mark. Academy Award winner (1968) for Best Short Documentary.

Farewell, Etaoin Shrdlu

A film created by Carl Schlesinger and David Loeb Weiss documenting the last day of hot metal typesetting at The New York Times. This film shows the entire newspaper production process from hot-metal typesetting to creating stereo moulds to high-speed press operation. At the end of the film, the new typesetting and photographic production process is shown in contrast to the old ways.

Featuring interviews with more than two dozen artists from across the United States, Sign Painters is the first film to explore the history of the time-honoured craft of sign painting. Documenting these dedicated practitioners, their methods, and their appreciation for quality and craftsmanship, the film profiles sign painters young and old, revealing the growing renaissance in the trade.
