The Chinese Film Festival: Under The Hawthorn Tree

The Embassy of the Republic of China in collaboration with MovieTowne hosts - The Chinese Film Festival. The festival runs from March 7th to 12th at MT POS Only. A beautiful innocent and melancholy love story takes place at the end of China's Cultural Revolution. Because her mother is branded "Capitalist", Jingqiu, a beautiful city girl, is sent to be 're-educated' through work in the countryside under Chariman Mao's programs of re-education. She is housed with a group in a small village, where they are shown a hawthorn tree called the Tree of Heroes. The tree is said to have been nourished by the blood of Chinese martyrs executed by the Japanese during World War II. During her stay Jingqiu falls in love with Lao San who promises to wait for her. However Jingqiu is torn, between her feelings for Lao San and her filial duty to her family, as their love is strongly opposed by her mother.
