When she loses her job at a gold mine, Choco is desperate to find another, if only so she can afford a cake for Candelaria’s birthday. The village shopkeeper, meanwhile, is willing to let Choco have the cake for a price. A bold act of filmmaking with a jaw-dropping finale, Choco is also an incisive portrait of the modern Afro-Colombian reality.
