Traverse along Seismic Line TD91-177
Date: Saturday 7th January, 2017
Time: 9am - 4pm
Trip Leaders:
Xavier Moonan, Amrit Cooblal, Ibraheem Ali, Stefon Harrypersad, Shaliza Ali & Zain Ramsingh
The Southern Basin has produced in excess of 2 billion barrels of oil to date from Late Oligocene - Pliocene reservoirs. Many of the large onshore oilfields were discovered in the early 1900's through surface seeps, identification of anticlines through surface dips and through well to well correlation.
In the late 1980's - 1990's Exxon explored onshore Trinidad in search of another 'El Furrial' oilfield targeting Cretaceous reservoirs. Halliburton Geophysical was contracted to acquire and process regional 2D seismic line across onshore Trinidad. Most lines were oriented NW-SE and were run approximately 2km apart, allowing Exxon to view cross sectional slices through the Southern Basin. One such line is the TD91-177 2D Seismic Line. While Exxon's wells were technical successes they however failed to redound in commercial discoveries.
Nevertheless, the regional seismic lines have since been used to build a framework for the structural complexity of the Middle Miocene and older fold belt which was unconformably overlain in places with the Proto-Orinoco deltaic deposits. Such interpretation has proven useful in palinspastic restorations of Trinidad, identification of further buried anticlines and general identification of stratigraphic traps.
As such the AAPG invites you to another unorthodox field trip. Led by structural geologists, geophysicists and sedimentologists, we will journey along the TD91-177 Seismic Line, integrating well data, sedimentological and structural analysis of adjacent outcrops, surface geology and geomorphology to interpret this typical cross section of the Southern Basin.
Participants will attempt on-site seismic interpretation guided by geological controls and observations in the field. Attendees will visit the offices of API Petroleum Limited and A&V Oil & Gas Limited, and also learn of the petroleum history of the basin as we unravel how these oilfields were discovered and
identify potential exploration areas for the future.
Limited spots available. PPE not required.
