Overview

This park which was previously the original Market Square on the island is named after A.P.T "Fargo" James, Tobago's pioneering political hero. In the 1930s and 1940's James was a worker at the La Brea Pitch lake in Trinidad where he was a part of the national labour movement led by local hero Tubal Uriah "Buzz" Butler. He returned to Tobago where he fought for a better life for Tobagonians in the 1950s as part of the Butler Political Party. He later joined the East Indian based DLP party and continued his political mission. In 1961, he lost the election to the PNM and died a few short months later, which many attributed to depression at being robbed of his leadership role.

Formerly a green park this square is now a concrete plaza. It is located in a very busy part of Upper Scarborough, near the old Georgian styled Court House where the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) meets.
