MAYARO The BAND…The Next Wave was conceived by its leader, Joel Ali, about 8 years ago while residing in Canada. Mayaro, a popular beach in Trinidad, was the last place he spent quality time with his dad (who passed away 2 days later); it was also the place that Joel pined for, during 23 long Winter
s.

MAYARO The BAND was initially formed in Toronto as a parang band (Christmas music that is played in Trinidad), and was later disbanded. Joel moved back to Trinidad in July of 2010 and in February, 2011, reformed his band. He brought to the band his extensive resume of playing guitar for huge Calypso and Soca stars, as well as for Motown great, Percy Sledge. He auditioned various musicians and by March, 2011, MAYARO The BAND…The Next Wave emerged. They play all types of music, ranging from Hard Rock (Ozzy), to Soft Rock (Fleetwood Mac), to Pop, to Soca and Calypso, to Reggae, to Parang, to Jazz and Blues. They cover it all!

In keeping with the beach theme of the band, Joel has given monikers to each member. Joel is Coconut Man, then there’s Chip Chip (Vocals), Irie (Vocals), Pirate (Guitar), Walyack (Bass), Mata (Drums), Sea Weed (Key boardist), Cascabelle (Key boards), Great White (Engineer) and Current (Manager). The followers and supporters of MAYARO The BAND…The Next Wave are called Coconut Heads!

In just one year, the Band has played out 3 times a week, for most of that time. They have played all over Trinidad; in the South: Fordy’s Pub and Lounge, D’Vibez Lounge, Skyy View Lounge, On Deck Pub and Razzmatazz; in the Central: Baltazzar Restaurant in Couva, and The Rise Restaurant and Mojo's in Chaguanas, and in the North at GoLocal@ Bobby’s, Shakers, Anchorage, MOKA, All Out Sports Bar and Aura, to resounding success! They’ve played at private parties, weddings and at the media launch of the Arima Car Racing event. They also carry on an Open Mic session at On Deck Pub, encouraging self-expression. They’ve also provided free entertainment for the local library’s fund raiser, as well as for SanCity Green Expo. On Aug. 20th, 2011, they played for the Ministry of the AG's Family Day. In August, 2011, the band placed in the Finals of the Anchorage POP Music Awards and they received the Best Female Vocals Award! In November 2011, they played at All Out Sports Bar in the Oval and at Anchorage for HOTT 93.5fm and in December, they played at Moka twice, for Gruff’s Parang Party and for ACI’s (Advanced Cardiovascular Institute) staff party, and at Fairway Gardens, Maraval. In February 2012, they were privileged to play at the Memorial Service for music icon Ralph MacDonald (Just the two of us), at Queen’s Hall. That month also saw the band on the streets of Port-of-Spain for Carnival Tuesday, where they also crossed the stage at the Savannah. In March, they played at a charity event for the Autistic Society, at the Naparima Bowl. On April 29th, at one year old, this band played in the Tobago Jazz Festival. In May, the band began a relationship with Toppers Sports Bar in Grand Bazaar and has been contracted to play there once a month, in between private gigs. On June 6th, they played for the Trinidad Express’s 45th Aniversary at Pier 1. Indeed, here are some comments on the band:
* “Thank you Mayaro for the wonderful performance at our wedding...you all did a brilliant job and fulfilled all our expectations...I look forward to great things from this band!” - Richard L C.
* “Went to your show at Bobby's the other night. You guys were great. Keep up the good work and make sure to come back to POS again.” -
* “i heard this band play at "the vibes" & i was pretty amazed...the lead female singer sang soooo gd...wow...she sang one of the songs even bttr that the original singer..gr8 job! (=” Nisha, referring to our rendition of Adele’s Rolling in the deep.
* “Of course your being prompt and completely set up and ready to perform prior to our official program scheduled start time was another positive statement beyond the norm”. The Motorsport Association of Trinidad and Tobago.
