His paintings which are rendered in a vivid assortment of pigments on combined board panels, are strongly rooted in depicting the dense, highly charged layers of the Trinidadian landscape which he sees as physical, social and spiritual.
The subjects of his paintings emerge from and flow freely between the streets of Port of Spain, to the rural spirit of natural vegetation, to the human form and back to the interior of his studio.
Reviewing his 2017 exhibition in New York, the New Yorker Magazine writes, ”Poised on the border between Cubism and Realism, Lovelace doesn’t really belong to any school; part of the beauty of his work lies in watching the artist establish his own rich vocabulary. He’s not afraid of pleasure and knows how much the soul craves color—a refuge during these dark days…”
About his solo exhibition at Galerie Hussenot in Paris (also 2017), Le Figaro newspaper writes, “Lovelace brings a fresh air to contemporary painting, with a palette that is joyful, intense and bright as well a brushstroke that is lively, alert, but firm…” Show Opens - July 20th... till August 10th 2018
